Content producers try to limit Boxee, the media center conversion software

Boxee a software that can convert computers, Apple TVs and other products into media centers is being restrained by the major studios content owners. The big feature here is a free access to Hulu's entire catalog on your TV. Boxee now announced that Hulu will no longer be supported.

Again how much handle you, as a producer have, on a free content on other media outlet. This software is allegedly easy and intuitive - If that means fewer ads and the link to partner sites is not as strong as login to Hulu.com directly through a computer, then you can see the reasons.

Sandisk declined Samsung bid

Samsung has mad an $5.8 billion offer to buy Sandisk, the largest manufacturer of memory cards.
Some of the reasons must be the large amount of royalties Samsung pays for the use of Sandisk flash technology and the wide distribution and retail brands for Sandisk's products.

Currently Sandisk works with Toshiba through agreements. Sandisk provides the technology and knowledge, while Toshiba provide the chips and operates the factories. SanDisk then puts these chips in products such as microSD cards for cell phones, SD cards for digital cameras, and USB drives.

Researches developed electronic eye camera

Researches from University of Illinois and Northwestern university created a camera similar to the human eye in size and shape. The camera consists of single-crystalline silicon detectors and electronics, configured in a stretchable, interconnected mesh," according to the University of Illinois.

This technology will put an entire image in focus. In today's camera, images taken are more sharper in the center than near the edges. The technology could be considered a leap forward in developing a bionic eye like the one worn in "The Terminator."

Sony to Invest in Expansion of Lithium Ion Battery Production

Sony announced that it will invest around 40 billion yen in strengthening and improving its lithium ion battery production.

Lithium Ion batteries, first introduced by Sony in 1992, combine high power capacity with compact size. Used in various devices from mobile phones, notebooks and digital cameras, to power tools and health care products.

The investment is made in order to construct new production facilities in Japan and expanding production from 41 million cells per month to 74 million in 2010.

Dell to enter music player market

PC makers Dell have been testing in recent months a digital music player, on sale from September. Dell's player, new attempt in the Apple-led market - companies like Microsoft and Sony have tried to enter the music player market in the past, dominated by Apple's iPod and iTunes service.

Sony plans a movie download service for its PlayStation 3

The service will be launched this summer in US and later in the European and Japanese markets.

The first rumors about a movie download service came out in 2005 in a interview with Sony executive. In December 2006, Financial Times article gave information about this service, available for the Sony PSP and being a possible rival to Apple's iTunes. PSP owners could download media from Sony's website to their PC and transfer it to the PSP flash card.

Past attempts of Sony creating online content ditribution failed. They closed Connect Store in March this year, because of the failed AMTRAC format becoming an alternative to MP3. The store was launched in 2004 as a response to iTunes. Also Sony sold Movielink, their joint effrot with several big studios, to Blockbuster.

According to Mozilla, the new version of their browser Firefox 3 passed the 8 million mark within 24 hours. The company attempted to set a Guinness record for most downloaded software, and wait for approval of the result.

The question is how many of these people switched from Internet Explorer, or are they long time Firefox users waiting for the end of Beta testing for version 3. And if they are IE users, will they stick to using the other browser.

I've been using Firefox 3 through the beta stages and I think the most noticeable aspect is the significantly low usage/efficient management of memory than in version 2. Another good improvement is organizing bookmarks. One thing really annoying is the autocomplete address bar now shows more information, title and description with the URL - very irritating to scroll through - but you could turn it off.

Blu-ray sales not as high as expected

Despite the win in the HD DVD/Blu-ray battle, potential consumers still hold on. Their is a decrease in standalone Blu-ray players (not PlayStation 3, combo players, or PCs with Blu-ray drives) since the beginning of the year.

There was a 40 percent decrease between January to February and only small increase of 2 percent between February and March, after the win against HD DVD.

More apparent reason reason is still the price of around $400 in March. During the holiday season the price was closer to $300. But also, many costumers settle for DVD quality picture and don't see justification in spending more money on what they see as slight increase in picture quality. According to Sony, one of the main producers of Blu-ray drives, $200 players won't be available until next year.

Sony joins Nokia's in unlimited music service.

Sony BMG, announced partnership with Nokia to make their musical catalog available on some of Nokia devices. After buying one of these Nokia devices the customer will have access for a year to the music of Alicia Keys, Foo Fighters or any other Sony BMG artist.

The customer could download music from Nokia's service "Come With Music" to a PC or to another Nokia handheld, but not to iPods or other non-compatible devices. After the 12 months the user will have the option of purchasing new content or joining Nokia's subscription service.

The new concept here is the download are not temporary, users can keep their files after that period and there is no limitation on the number of songs.

Nokia will launch "Comes With Music" service in the second half of the year.

GTA IV expected to break sales record

Take-Two's latest installment of Grand Theft Auto, GTA IV, is slated for an April 29 release for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 consoles.

The game is predicted to sell $400 million for the first week of release, the biggest debut of a video game title.

The game will offer, for the first time, multiplayer options with up to 15 modes, each supporting up to 16 players.

The standard version price will be $59.99. The special edition which include artwork book, soundtrack cd, encased in a metal deposit box, will cost $89.99.

Motorola plans to split into two companies. Motorola's sales, who created the mobile phone market 25 years ago, are in decline for the past four quarters as Apple and Nokia are the company's main competitors.

Google, Yahoo, and News Corp.'s MySpace.com announced on teusday (March 25) that they have formed the OpenSocial Foundation, a nonprofit group to support the OpenSocial initiative that Google started last year to promote a universal standard for developer applications on social-networking sites.

Electronic Arts and Massive, a sub company of Microsoft that specializing in video game advertising, announced an expansion and two-year extension of their agreement to offer dynamic in-game advertising for EA video games. That means playing the EA titles like Madden NFL football, NBA LIVE basketball, NASCAR racing and NHL hockey and the Need for Speed series on their online network with in-game ads.

I wonder if that means cutting the prices of console and pc games, or just adding to the revenue of the companies involved?

Six-core Intel processor coming this year

The next step in processor design, according to Intel is scalable cores, from two to up to eight.

The six-core Dunnington server CPU platform using Penryn architecture , with 16 Mb of L3 cache, goes into production this summer. That will be the last of Intel x86 processor with a front side bus (CPU linked to memory on a separate circuit). After that, the Nehalem architecture, in the fourth quarter of this year, will present simultaneous multi threading: the ability for each core to process two threads at the same time. Not alternately(hyper threading), but at the same time.

Hulu is a joined effort of News Corporation and NBC to enter the free video sharing market. The site, completely funded by ads, launched March 15 and features 250 full-length episodes of TV series and 100 feature films and also hundreds of shorter videos.

There are content deals with Warner Bros. and Lionsgate.

The guardian article mentions that in order for this project to be a major player in online TV content they should partner with CBS and Disney/ABC. I can't see NBC joining with rival TV networks.

Nokia introduced a flexible mobile. The Morph phone has been developed by Nokia and nanotechnology experts at Cambridge University, and was recently unveiled at New York's Museum of Modern Art.

The phone can be used as keyboard when laid flat. While folded it turns into very thin mobile phone, or into a bracelet worn wirelessly connected to a headset.

Manipulating materials on atomic level, create devices that never get wet - because they repel water effectively - or can sense their surroundings, being able to tell whether food is off or measure the temperature of the people wearing them.

The device is read-only, and price is not yet set, but it's supposed to be competitive.

Nokia's 'Remade' Cell Phone Made Of Recycled Materials

Nokia's 'Remade' is a Cell made almost entirely from recycled materials, including aluminum cans, plastics from drink bottles, and old car tires for the rubber key mats. The phones would also use environment-friendly technologies, including printed electronics and display graphics that save energy, according to Nokia. The phone is still in concept stage.

The phone was unveiled at the Mobile World Congress conference in Barcelona. The idea is to reduce usage of natural resources, landfill and increasing energy-efficient production.

Another concept Nokia is working on called Eco Sensor, consists of a wearable mobile phone and a sensing device analyzing a person's health and his surrounding environment.

For those who can't wait for 'Remade' Nokia will offer the '3110 Evolve', a mobile consists of 50% renewable materials, in the first half of 2008. The phone would be packaged with 60% recycled content and comes with an efficient charger that uses 94% less energy.

modu is an Israeli startup company that attempts to create a market for modular mobiles. I heard about the costume colored sleeves in NOKIA but here they take another step by adding electronic devices specific for their modu phones. The extra devices include: a large screen or keyboard, MP4 player etc.

"The mobile phone industry is ready for a revamp," said Dov Moran, modu’s CEO and founder, who is also the inventor of the USB Flash Drive and other personal storage solutions.

"There are hundreds of handset models on the market: the trouble is that as a consumer you can only have one at a time and you are usually tied to a long and expensive contract. modu is challenging that with a solution that offers freedom, boundless possibilities and the opportunity to change your phone without it costing a fortune," Moran said.

The company are already in partnership with companies such as SanDisk, Texas Instruments, Blaupunkt, Universal Music Group and carriers such as Telecom Italia, Israeli firm Cellcom and the Russian VimpelCom. The phone will be available to the three carriers in October this year and plans to launch in in the US early 2009.

Carriers will be able to sell a modu and two sleeves for less than $300, the price could go considerably lower or free with a two-year contract.

Another round won for Blue Ray after Warner Bros. announced they were dropping dual hi-def DVD format support in order to back only Blu-Ray. Computerworld reporting that week after Warner's announcement, sales of HD DVD players dropped to 1,758, from 14,558 the previous week. In contrast, consumers bought 21,770 Blu-Ray Disc players, up from 15,257 the previous week.

So Blue Ray seems to be the future standard for High-Definition. I think that the inclusion of Blue Ray in Playstation 3 consoles was a big factor of deciding the leading format.

Apple plans for a free software update in week or two for Apple TV costumers. The movies will be available for customers to rent through Apple's iTunes online music store. Apple plans to have 1000 movie titles by the end of february, that include 100 HD titles.

Apple catalog of movies will consist of the six major stodios that agreed make their titles available through iTunes. The studios included: 20th Century Fox, Warner Bros., Walt Disney, Paramount, Universal, and Sony. New films titles will be available 30 days after shippment to retailers on DVD.
